Elvis… Suspicious Minds

When I paint, if I listen to the wrong thing, it all tends to go horribly wrong.

I love painting to The Archers on Radio 4- there must be something in the tempo of the lives of ordinary farming folks that lends it self to my style.

When I am stuck for something to paint… Elvis is my man.

Oh, I did not realise when I posted Queen earlier that it was the anniversary of Mr Mercury’s death today.

Funny how coincidences conspire to find you.

This is all kinds of awesome: David Bowie and Annie Lennox singing my all time favorite Mercury song.

Queen were kind of not that cool to me and most of my friends- but now they feel like they were a soundtrack to whole swathes of time.

And I love hearing these tunes now.

Ah, this reminds me of one of those heinous “stillcringingnow” moments.

My cousin, my mom and I are driving to Wrightsville NC from Charlotte.

My cousin realises that there is something wrong with her car, and we limp off the highway towards a parking lot… outside of a strip mall.

The car splutters and coughs- and as she calls for assistance, she dispatches me to the nearby Greek Homestyle Restaurant to “find out where we are”

So, I run…and as I run, I think “must remember to sound Southern… it’ll be quicker”

So, in my finest drawl, I say “Sir, could you help me? I’m having some problems and need to call the AA… and, well, I don’t know where I am.”

“You don’t know where you are?”

*nervous laugh” “nope!”

“Laurenburg.”

“Er, thanks”

Go back to car… tell story of how he really wasn’t very friendly…. dawning realization:

“Honey, in the states, we call Triple A for cars- double A for whiskey”

I am taking part in this exhibition on Sunday.

The idea is that 100 Artists exhibit for an evening… all the works of art will be for sale, and a percentage of the sale price goes to The Sussex Beacon.

The Beacon started life in 1992 as a hospice- but now has expanded in to a true Beacon in our little community down here on the south coast…. Their aim being to empower people living with HIV/AIDS.

I know that over the years it has helped, supported and comforted (too) many of my friends, and I love them for it.

So, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to help the Beacon, but I’m also PSYCHED that I’m going to hang out with 99 Artists for an evening!

Everyone’s welcome…. so book your flights now, international tumblrs of the world :)
